1. Is weightlifting, team camp, June workouts a guarantee that my daughter make a team or can someone who misses all
of these things just show up and make the team?
Answer: Nothing in the spring or summer is mandatory, these workouts are designed to help your daughter prepare for
tryouts. Nothing is guaranteed. We base our decision on skill level, work ethic, and attitude. Hopefully the spring and summer
will help your daughter improve in those areas that will be judged at tryouts.
2. What is the difference between the "B" team and "JV" team?
The B team is usually for first time basketball players at SHS that are not ready for JV. The coaches see potential
and want to focus more on fundamentals and learning the game. The team is usually for athletes who would perhaps not get much
playing time on JV but we want to keep in the program for developmentand they would get more playing time on the B team. If
the athlete is a 9th grade student than she can play on both teams as long as she does not play in more thatn 16 games in
the season. If your child is a middle school student she can play on ONE of the teams, if she is moved up then she has to
stay on the highest level team for the remainder of the year. The coaches will place the athletes on the appropriate team
at first and then make needed adjustments.
3. WHy did you start the B team?
I started the B team to give more girls the opportunity to play basketball at the appropriate level. Other
schools in the Charleston area saw a need and therefore we joined in the first year. The space they leave on the middle school
teams gives other girls an opportunity to come out when normally they would not make any team. Also, it keeps the girls from
sitting on the bench at the JV level.
4. When does B team practice?
They practice with the JV team and by themselves when the varisty and JV teams travel to away games. They play on
Saturdays but this year it may have to be on Wednesday night also.
5. Is there a preference on the team camp?
No, we would like for each girl to participate in at least one team camp. Most girls are going to two camps. Furman
is for both Varsity and JV/B.
6. Who is going to the head JV coach?
We are excited to announce that Matt Legare, former Rollins head coach, will take the reigns of the JV program.
7. Do the athletes have to participate in weights and conditioning as well as basketball workouts?
Yes, it is the level of commitment we are looking for in our athletes. It is important for the girls to be stronger
and in good condition for the season. They will be doing basketball specific weight program.
